Research project: Living with cinema: curatorship and programming in cinema as a critical praxis, act of engagement and articulation of cultural differences

This project aims to consolidate an investigation on the curatorship and programming activity in cinema as a critical praxis, capable of responding to the political challenge of new cinematographic productions, coming from new cinema subjects active in the contemporary cinematographic scenario. We will analyze the strategies forged by Brazilian film festivals (which grow in number and critical-historical impact) to face the racial, gender and class fractures that constitute Brazilian culture and society in their way of specifically affecting cinema as an institution. The research's interest is to reflect on the extent to which a curatorship and programming activity, in multicultural and post-colonial contexts, can constitute an articulator of cultural differences. The intention that circumscribes the object of this work is both to elaborate a theoretical reflection on the curatorial activity in cinema, articulated with the notion of representativeness and representation, and to investigate, comparatively, curatorial practices in different festivals (domestic and foreign) and its critical and socio-political implications.

Research Project: Body-Image

Video, in the context of contemporary art, undergoes a continuous transformation. It is an emancipation in the field of visuality from operational methods regarding genres and, above all, languages. When observing the transformations that took place in the field of video in the 1980s and 1990s, we notice a close relationship with the practices, in the artistic field, of recording, performance and the intimate diary. The ease of use of digital cameras, combined with the "excess" in capture and disposal, provided a radical change in terms of the relationship with the image. The works analyzed and distributed in this project, consisting of 32 works, form the scene of artists who articulate a solid research in the field of image, pursuing the performative processes and their potentialization through the image. They are performers and video artists who manage to act as part of the environment they perform and, therefore, their performances and videos have a curious and subtle pulse. Motivated by this trend, we seek to expand these concepts and artistic means of expression, for a research on media analysis.

Research Project: Diaspora and Perspectivism in Rock. Experiences in the musical scenes of Salvador and Recôncavo, BA

This research project seeks to interpret the Rock music scenes in Salvador and in the cities of the territory of identity known as Recôncavo da Bahia based on the presence, (de)valuation and distribution of diasporic and/or perspectivist characteristics in the sounds, lyrics and social performance of agents involved in the everyday experience of Rock, understood as a cultural genre. In this sense, it maps and systematizes the Rock music scenes in the cities of Salvador, Cachoeira, São Félix, Maragojipe, Cruz das Almas and Santo Antônio de Jesus from those poetic gestures understood as anachronisms, namely: movements that take time from below to above, reorganizing what is in time with what is outside of it (RANCIÈRE, 2011). Finally, it is intended to present the results of this project both in academic articles, books and magazines, as well as from audiovisual productions and photographic exhibitions.

Research project: Pop music is global, but the accent is local - territorialities, cosmopolitanisms, valuations and the construction of Global South pop music scenes

Description: This research project aims to understand the communication strategies of urban pop music from the so-called Global South, based on its market, sociological, ideological articulations and its local, national and transnational cultural contexts. Starting from the discussion of the notion of music scene (STRAW) and its extension to concepts such as aesthetic cosmopolitanism, localism, bastard cultures, cities and globalization, we have as a case study of the new urban pop music in Salvador (Bahia) to understand how musical practices occupy geographic, economic and affective territorialities, from certain political-aesthetic experiences that create new aesthetic languages, in a transcultural environment. In this perspective, we believe that thinking about cities as a key territory is essential to understand the field of music and its social, political and economic surroundings (STRAW, 2018).

Research project:
The constitution of the spatialities of the city-middle: semiosis, politics and sensorium

This project aims to point out the parameters that guide the understanding of the functioning of the political dimension of the city-middle. McLuhan emphasizes that the city is an extension of the sensorium as a whole, capable of inciting less logical and more analogical forms of reasoning. In accordance with the author's ideas, it is noted that politics is one of the dimensions that qualifies the city as a medium. However, in this context, politics is not understood as an a priori, because, according to our hypothesis, only because of the tension between opposing actions, related to the "way of being" incited by the cognitive perceptual dimension of the city-middle, politics effectively erupts and makes present in the culture. As a methodological analysis strategy, we will base ourselves on the epistemological perspective of the study of culture formulated by the semiotician of the School of Tártu-Moscow Iúri Lótman. Thus, based on the materiality of the language of a cultural text (in this case, the city understood as a communicative medium), the space of relations it articulates through the exchanges and tensions built between different systems and codes for, then, to infer the relationships instigated by them, politics being one of them.

Research project:
Other beauties: beauty instead of fashion.

After the insistent denial of the beautiful in the 20th century and in the face of the multiplicity of expressive interventions of contemporaneity, the problematic of the beautiful has reappeared. The criticism that denied it has given rise to a questioning about new possibilities for the recognition of new standards of beauty, redefining its role in today's processes of creation and enjoyment. Based on this concern, we will reflect on the place of beauty in contemporaneity, taking into account its specificities and the possibility of absorbing forms in the current moment, from its creation process, through the contemplative act of reception, with the universe of fashion as reference comprising, together with Maffesoli (1996), that "the beautiful shared with others is at the base of the organization of the techné and the polis" (p. 156). In this sense, some questions arise: If beauty, in fact, is once again part of the intellectual, artistic and fashion agenda, how is it constituted? Are there any principles that would guide it in a different way? Does contemporary beauty institute itself in new ways? How does it reach and affect us? The conceptual and methodological markers are inscribed in the tradition of Aesthetics and the recent Aesthetics of Communication.
